Am I the only one ….. who marvels about time every now and then?

TIME

Time is very generous with the wisdom it will share
often it will be our tutor, teaching us to care.

Time can be your enemy or it can be your friend
and it can be a healer, when a heart needs to mend.

Time creates opportunities or it can take them away,
time can be the culprit or it can save the day.

Time isn’t free, but it most certainly can’t be bought,
you cannot put a price tag on the lessons time has taught.

Time is very precious, but can’t be saved for a rainy day.
most everyone has had dreams that time has stolen away.

Time is never stationary, it constantly keeps moving on,
it can never stay, it’s here only until it’s gone.

Time is unending, though it’s often far too short,
and at times it simply wanders, like a ship without a port.

Time is a valuable commodity, but it can’t be bought & sold,
for the young it seems everlasting, not so once you get old.

Time waits for no man; ultimately you’ll sing your final song.
There’s a time to mend your fences and a time to move along.

When our time is running out, it cuts us like a knife,
yet time is but a measure used to quantify our life.

Hopefully, time has been generous with the wisdom it has shared
and when your time has come, let’s hope you are prepared.

Am I the only one…. who tends to get confused by all the acronyms in use today?

ACRONYMS
Richard Lee King

typrewriterThey use so many acronyms in sports that we need a dictionary designated just for acronyms. Some of them have been around so long that many of us know them, but what about those people who are new to the sport? In baseball I know what MVP, RBI, BA, R, H, E and quite a few others, but my granddaughters don’t. Oh, and what about the new ones that are constantly cropping up? The article I was reading referred to OPS several times. I have no clue as to what an “OPS” is. I know what Oops is and at first that’s what I thought this was, an OOPS! A mistake…. But as I read a little further, they referred to it again. One “typo” could possibly be an Oops, but a few sentences later the same Oops? Somehow that just didn’t sound very likely.

In football, they use terms like “Quarterback, Half Back, Defensive Back and Linebacker. Plus, when you are talking about linebackers, they can be an inside linebacker, outside linebacker or a middle linebacker. Then they start throwing in the ACRONYMS. Half back becomes the H back or HB. Quarterback is QB. When it comes to the linebackers they are LB or ILB or OLB or MLB. An offensive lineman is OL and defensive lineman is DL, or is that Disabled List? Are you beginning to see where I’m going with this?

It seems that there is a need for a series of dictionaries for the various sports, something small that you could carry in your pocket or in a purse. Wouldn’t it be nice if Budweiser, Coke, Pepsi or someone who is a regular sponsor of sporting events were to put out something like that as a promotional giveaway?

Or, maybe some sharp entrepreneur could start a website where he had a series of different dictionaries available at the click of a key, each one for a different sport or industry. Or maybe one dictionary for all acronyms and another for all sporting terms.

Maybe you’d be able to pick your own criteria. Maybe there is already something like this available…. Who knows? Maybe I should “Google” it? Do you see what I mean? Ten years ago if I said I was going to “Google it,” how many people do you think would have had a clue as to what I was talking about? Not only that, but now we have “Bing” and, of course, “Twitter and Tweeting” which are even more recent.

It just never ends.

Am I the only one ….. who feels our unsung heroes deserve more?

UNSUNG HEROES
©  By: Richard L. King

To those who’ve fought the enemy and lived to come back home,
those who’ll spend their years reliving the horrors they have known.

To those who slept in foxholes and those who drove the tanks,
those who protect our freedoms ….to you we give our thanks.

To those who chase the criminals or pursue a speeding car,
who watch over us each day, yet we know not who you are.

To those who drive the fire trucks and run in to put out the flames,
who risk your lives each day, though we seldom know your names.

To those who drive the ambulance or care for the infirmed
…those who make a difference, our respect you all have earned.

To you, our unsung heroes …and to all of your alums,
as your dedication we applaud we shall all have upturned thumbs.

Here’s to you.

Am I the only one ….. Who is fed up with all the attention that kneeling during our National Anthem has been getting?

ZZZ - PATRIOTIC PHOTO

RESPECTING OUR FLAG
By: Richard L. King

The playing of the National Anthem is not a time for protest. It is not a time to draw attention to yourself or to be used as a platform for any of your personal causes. It’s our National Anthem! It’s the rocket’s red glare….. bombs bursting in air… the song that honors every American who has ever worn the uniform of our country to protect the rights of its citizens….  It is a time to show respect and pride for our country and for our military. It is a time to put our patriotism on display for the whole world to see.

Patriotism comes in many forms, but the very basics begin with respecting our flag and our National Anthem. During the playing of our National Anthem, it is the responsibility of every American to immediately discontinue any conversation, stand, (men take your hat off) place your right hand over your heart (unless you are a veteran, in which case you already know what is proper) and proudly sing along in honor of our country and the men and women who have given so much to earn and maintain our freedom.   It’s a time to thank them for the sacrifices they make every day.

You cannot lay claim to your right to freedom of speech by acting in a manner disrespectful to the men and women who wore the uniform, some of whom fought and bled, to give you that right. No matter how important your cause may be, and likely we can all agree that the stated cause is a worthy one, disrespecting the traditions inherent with the playing of our National Anthem is not a proper way to call attention to them.

Am I the only one … who has ever had to overcome the loss of a loved one?

Song Quote, “Your eyes have a mist from the smoke of a distant fire.”

DISTANT FIRES
© By: Richard L. King

sadness (2)

Misty eyes, life expires
broken heart, loves desires

Move along, love is missed
seeking now, you reminisce

Another look, another dance
smiling face, second chance

Time passes, companion tried
kindly heart, love denied

Move again, evade the miss
seeking now, newfound kiss

Additional look, another chance
lots of fun, no romance

Tangled sheets, pillow talk
not a fit, take a walk

Multiple looks, chances taken
wishful thinking, sadly mistaken

False hope, false starts
broken promises, damaged hearts

Senior years, seeking still
time is short, low on will

Computer pop-up, experiment tried
there she was, unable to hide

Ten years later, still a unit
the songs a hit, no need to tune it

Misty eyes, distant fires
refurbished heart, loves desires
