MEMENTOES & MEMORIES

We meander our way through life
…slowly at first,
until near the finish
…the pace quickens.

Each day
…collecting mementos & memories
…dreams & treasures.

A favorite saying,
a treasured gift,
a long lost pet….
an old love…

By any name
…they are merely pieces we’ve collected.

Hopefully the good out-number those less so,
but either way we continue collecting

…all the while
attempting to slow the quickening pace.
…and we survey our pieces,
savoring them,
dare say, hording them.

Then one day collecting ceases,

we meander no more…
our collection is left behind.
…forever lost
…..forever remembered?

Hopefully we are wise enough,
to leave some great mementos
….and memories

for those who follow.

Just as we are ever so hopeful that some of the mementos we leave here will become fond memories of our followers.

Am I the Only One…who packs way too much when traveling?

suitcaseFor example,  we are leaving for a week out of state, I was asked by Dick if we would be able to get everything in a carry-on bag and not have to check luggage.

What? No!

Seven days means 7 outfits and 2 or 3 extra just in case I spill something and have to change in the middle of the day, plus, of course shoes for each outfit.  Add all the other ‘stuff’ (jewelry, make-up, hair products, various chargers for phones, cameras, etc, medicines, books to read, jackets in case it gets cool, dressy outfits, – I think you get the idea.)

Carry-on!  Please!  I’m taking a TRUNK.

Am I the only one…… who’s impressed by our local Veteran’s Memorial Park?

A TRIBUTE TO A TRIBUTE

Veterans ParkA short time ago, my sweetie and I had about an hour to kill and decided that we would stop by the Veteran’s Memorial Park, located on Veterans Highway in Port St. Lucie, FL.  Neither of us had ever visited it and we thought this would provide a good opportunity to do so.  I’ve never “kilt an hour” more productively.  To my way of thinking, this memorial is probably one of the more honorable things that have ever been done in the Treasure Coast area.  Our little visit was definitely one of the best decisions we have made in recent memory.  What an impressive memorial we have right here in our backyard.  I have to say however, to be completely honest, you simply cannot do it justice in only one hour.

As you walk from the parking lot, you encounter tributes to all five branches of the military, located around a meeting area with bench seating.  It’s an area where one could conceivably assume that many memorial services have transpired.  There are plaques commemorating the formation of all 5 branches of our military, as well as the emblem for each branch encased in concrete at each of the five corners of the seating area.  This area is located directly in front of a large, lighted United States flag, which one would assume is on display 24/7/365.

Other displays include a Korean War Memorial, a memorial honoring the veterans of WW II and one honoring all combat wounded veterans. Additionally there is a wall, which would appear to be a replica of the Vietnam Veterans wall in Washington DC.

We found this to be a very worthwhile memorial park, of which the City of Port St. Lucie can and should take a great deal of pride.   With very little effort this little park could conceivably become one of the more sought out tourist attractions in this area.  Were I a “snowbird” coming to this area to take in a Mets ballgame, or any of the other local attractions and were I somehow to be made aware of this magnificent little park, I believe it would have a prominent place on my itinerary.

Am I the only one …who suffers an attack of road rage when grocery shopping?

I think we would all benefit from some Grocery Cart Driver’s Training.  Perhaps the following rules could be considered:

  1. Drive your cart on the right side of the aisle, just as you keep your car on the right side of the road (at least I hope you do). If you’re on the wrong side of the aisle and try to play ‘chicken’ with me, you will lose every time.
  2. Do not leave your cart alone, particularly if you’ve parked in slap dab in the middle of the aisle, while you go in search of an item. (My suggestion when you see an abandoned cart is to push it to the next aisle so the owner has to look for it.)
  3. If you are a senior citizen, as I am, do NOT shop on the week-end. This is when working mothers’ are trying to shop for their children’s lunch items.  Seniors, we’ve got all week to grocery shop – stay home on Saturday.
  4. Ladies, leave the hubby home when you shop. Or at least confine him to the car to wait for you.  Ask yourself, is he really helpful?  Does he do anything other than push the cart –down the middle of the aisle, by the way – and stand in the way as you’re examining every ketchup bottle on the shelf?  The line behind you is getting longer while hubby waits for permission from you to move on.
  5. Keep your visits short when you run into your neighbor. Go home and chat with them.  People are waiting to get past.  Don’t pretend you don’t see them.

I’m sure the list of Rules for Grocery Cart Driving could be extensive.  Do you have something that you would like to add to the list?  Perhaps we can start up our own school.
