Humorous

AM I THE ONLY ONE . . . who wants others to volunteer?

VOLUNTEER WORK

Thinking that being a volunteer
would be a rewarding way to spend each day,
I ran and was elected to our Condo Board,
For which you receive no pay.

Now I could get involved
in all the policy setting.
I was sure we could make decisions
that our residents wouldn’t be regretting

My phone rang with my first call.
A resident parked in the wrong space.
To some, it was an extreme emergency.
He needed to be put in the proper place.

Other concerns were nearly as important,
unless you feel you’ve been snubbed.
One lady had new plants outside her window,
while her neighbor had nasty old shrubs.

Mr. Fisher had guests for the week-end.
Someone complained the day they arrived.
What was I thinking when I volunteered?
Suddenly, I began to wonder if I’d survive.

Being on the Board of Directors was not a joy,
the complaints to numerous to court,
particularly in a 55+ community.
Of this I’m thoroughly qualified to vouch.

Each day brings a new challenge
with good news or bad to promptly deliver.
Should I decide to volunteer again,
take my temperature to make sure there’s no fever.

AM I THE ONLY ONE . . . . who wants to never forget My Military Men.

MY MILITARY MEN
©August 2010 Donna Hale Chandler

Both my dad and my husband
answered the call from Uncle Sam.
My dad served during WWII,
my husband in Viet Nam.

There was never any question
of whether to go or stay.
If we’re to have our freedom.
there’ll always be a price to pay.

They each left their happy homes
and all their family and friends.
Everyone praying every night,
their respective wars would quickly end.

My dad served in the Navy.
My husband was Army bound.
Each one completed his duty,
neither giving any ground.

My husband left me
with little more than an “I love you.”
I’m just standing there alone,
no choice, but try to make due.

The serviceman goes off to battle.
Those left behind, just count the days.
We worry about their safety,
willing their warrior to find his way.

We try to rally their morale,
cheerful letters every day,
trying to sound optimistic,
though we seldom feel that way.

As we celebrate for their return.
think of those they left at home.
And know they suffered too,
though often, totally on their own.

Family

AM I THE ONLY ONE . . .who sees Christmas as a season of love?

I was trying to come up with something clever that tied into the holidays when I ran across this poem that I wrote several years ago. It isn’t Christmasy but it is a reminder that we need to let those we love know how much they are loved and cherished.

Having said that, Gentlemen, take heed, could your special lady be feeling this way?

WHY DOES HE LOVE HER?

Does he love her because
she’s charming and witty?
Or maybe it’s because
she’s caring and pretty.

Does he love her because
she’s comfortable to be around?
Old shoes are comfortable
and there’s plenty to be found.

Does he truly see her?
Does he know the color of her eyes?
Does he know when she’s sad?
Does he know how hard she tries?

Does he really hear her
during each conversation?
Or perhaps he’s thinking
about his next vacation.

Does he tell her he cares
or just assume she knows?
Would he think it’s silly
to present her a single rose?

Does he know of her hunger
to be needed and desired?
Is she always in his thoughts
even when he’s weary and tired.

Why does he love her?
Does she know the reason?
Perhaps he should tell her
Before the passing of the season.

AM I THE ONLY ONE . . . who has been up close and personal with a baby dinosaur?

By: Donna Hale Chandler

Life is never dull when you have a child with thousands of questions to ask.

My daughter was always quite curious,
having one question after another.
Seemed her brain was constantly swirling,
giving pause to her father and mother.

Our trip to Florida was filled with wonder
for a blue eyed little 4-year old blond.
In this strange new and exciting world
she questioned every new sight and sound

Why is the sky such a pretty blue?
Why are the clouds so fluffy and white?
Where does the ocean end?
and why so many stars at night?

Her questions and wonder never ended
As she ran and played in the sunshine.
She’d search for funny stones or shells,
each discovery as thrilling as a gold mine.

One day she came running in all excited,
I followed quickly to see what was in store.
She pointed at a small creature, a tiny gecko.
filled with pride at finding a baby dinosaur!
