THE PLEDGE
© Copyright 2013 Richard Lee King

It’s the final round of the 2011 U S Open Golf championship.  They start it off with a series of patriotic scenes and shots of past championships.  Part of the way through the presentation, you hear a class of school kids reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.   NICE!!!   They continue with great scenes of the military presenting our flag and more scenes from previous “Open” championships. Then a few more lines of the Pledge… more scenes… more of the pledge, it’s all very nicely done,  except for one thing,,,, as they continue with the kids reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, they pause,,, just after the words “… and to the republic, for which it stands one nation……”  then they continue…. leaving out the words “under God” and pick it back up again with the words “With liberty and Justice for all.  They continue running more scenes then more of the kids saying the Pledge and they do exactly the same thing,,, Again…..

Now they’ve “gotten my dander up” This country was founded by people who believed in God…. Our court houses and most of our federal buildings have all contained references to God or religion…. from day one.  Our money, our constitution, the bill of rights…. they all contain some reference to God.

I’m not the least bit religious, but it burns my ass that NBC would cower to the people who take exception to the use of God’s name in our Pledge of Allegiance. They’ve gone too far.  It’s un American!!!!

Let me assure you… it’s not people like me, (who are not particularly religious) who are pushing for this…. The removal of references to God in all ways relating to our nation..… that’s not coming from us.

I was raised attending a country school.  Every morning we stood before the flag, placed our hand over our heart and recited the Pledge…. every single morning….. And,,,, it always included “Under God.”  I never once felt threatened by that.  Nor am I bothered by the fact that the words, “In God We Trust” are on our money.  I’m not bothered by any of the references to God.  Just so you know….

FREEDOM ON THE 4TH
© Copyright 2013 Richard Lee King

Independence Day is a precious time when we all should reaffirm,
thank our ancestors for the freedom they fought so hard to earn.

It’s our country’s birthday, the day a new nation was born
and for a number of years that followed, we faced a mighty storm.

If you ask people on the street, what we commemorate this day,
the answers will be varied, you may be surprised at what they say,

Some will fly our flag, but many won’t know the reason,
most will find a fireworks display much more to their pleasing.

Our country celebrates on the 4th for the very best of reasons,
our forefathers rebelled against tyranny,  facing charges of treason.

The 4th of July is a patriotic demonstration, a way of reuniting,
the fireworks displays help to memorialize the fighting.

Sometimes we need that reminder of the meaning of this day,
so we don’t get distracted, as we continue on our merry way.

It helps to make us more aware of the troubles that were endured
while breaking away from tyranny, as our freedom was secured.

The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control.”  ~ origination unknown

AM I THE ONLY ONE. . . . who has apprehension about the amount of pre-storm coverage we receive?

HURRICANE SEASON

I wrote this article a few years ago when there was a lot of complaining about what seemed like overkill in the pre-storm reporting of a storm that was heading toward Florida.  In light of the recent storm and the tornadoes that accompanied it, I thought it might be appropriate to run it again.

********

Seems like everyone is up in arms over the big hull-a-baloo the media made over Hurricane Erica last week.  Get used to it folks.  There is big money in storms.  The grocery stores sell out, the gas stations have lines, generator sales go up, the sale of plywood skyrockets, and all manner of hurricane supplies fly off the shelves.

Do you think the retail industry is complaining about the overkill involved in reporting a tropical depression as a full-blown hurricane?  – or the fact that they had the storm track so fouled up that Einstein couldn’t have figured it out?   Hell, no they ain’t!

It’s damn good for business…..  And what’s good for business is good for Florida.  If the projected storm track takes in the whole damn state, then the retail sales in the whole damn state will also be positively affected.  Who’d complain about that?

On a more serious note, the early warnings that we get in more recent years are a Godsend. It’s probably much better to be over-prepared than it is to be un-prepared, don’t you think?  The early warnings allow us to be much better prepared.  Starting in June or July anyone with good common sense will have most of their hurricane supplies pretty much attended to.  At least those that are not perishable.

We will have our propane tanks set aside for lights and cooking burners. We’ll have a large supply of batteries for all the battery-operated things we might use.  (Radios, lights, fans and things of that nature.) We’ll have all the canned foods that might be needed to get us through a lengthy power outage. (some of those canned goods in my supplies are several years old and I have some MRE’s still left over from Francis and Jean’s aftermath) We may even have bottled water, beer and wine on standby, but most of us will probably wait until a storm is imminent before laying in those more perishable types of supplies.

As a final thought, perhaps the TV stations overdo it a tad bit, but isn’t that preferable to not reporting about pending storms at all?

RESPECTING OUR FLAG
© Copyright 2013 Richard Lee King

The playing of the National Anthem is not a time for protest.  It is not a time to draw attention to yourself or to be used as a platform for any of your personal causes.  It’s our National Anthem! It’s the rocket’s red glare…..  bombs bursting in air…  the song that honors every American who has ever worn the uniform of our country to protect the rights of its citizens….  It is a time to show respect and pride for our country and for our military.  It is a time to put our patriotism on display for the whole world to see.

Patriotism comes in many forms, but the very basics begin with respecting our flag and our National Anthem.  During its playing, it is the responsibility of every American to immediately discontinue any conversation, stand, (men take your hat off) place your right hand over your heart (unless you are a veteran, in which case you already know what is proper) and proudly sing along in honor of our country and the men and women who have given so much to earn and maintain our freedom.   It’s a time to thank them for the sacrifices they have made and continue making every day.

You cannot lay claim to your right of freedom of speech by acting in a manner disrespectful to the men and women who wore the uniform and fought to give you that right.  No matter how important your cause may be, disrespecting the traditions inherent with the playing of our National Anthem is not a proper way to call attention to them.
