MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day approaches… As soldiers’ step to the fore,
we’ll celebrate their service, just as so many times before.

We’ll thank them for their gift, because of them, freedom reigns,
maybe not for the entire world, but at least they’re making gains.

Today we’ll honor those we’ve lost, for a moment, we’ll remember,
then we’ll put the memories away, until a day in mid-November.

We’ll take their gift for granted, at least til Veterans Day,
but their gift is all encompassing in nearly every single way.

Freedom, bought and paid for by the blood of our brave soldiers,
with the fate of the entire world, thrust upon their shoulders.

365 days a year our soldiers pay the price
yet according to our calendar, we honor them only twice.

It’s nice we have this day, to honor their sacrifice
but if we honored them every day, it would be 365 times as nice.

We need to tell them thank you, more than just two days a year,
express more appreciation for the way they’ve calmed our fear.

PATRIOTISM
© Copyright 2011 Richard Lee King

Memorial Day is upon us, it’s the year two thousand eleven.
We’re still fighting violence, sending our soldiers off to heaven.

Oh, of course that’s not the intent & the majority of them come back,
but there’ve been literally thousands who spilled their blood in Iraq.

First, we send them into Hell carrying their canteen and a gun.
And of course, it’s really not Hell, but sure as Hell, it’s not fun.

Then, when and if they come home, it’s to nearly total indifference.
Yet, they know why they were there, to them it makes perfect sense.

So, once or twice a year we celebrate their heroism.
On Veteran’s and Memorial Day, we band together against terrorism.

But, it’s right back to all the apathy when the sun comes up tomorrow.
Patriotism goes back on the shelf for that day and those that follow.

Seems we can’t be bothered worrying about our soldiers’ plight,
except for those two days and I’m far from convinced that’s right.

Every single day we have soldiers in harm’s way.
Seems we should honor them on more than just two special days.

Thank You sailors & soldiers

RESPECTING OUR UNSUNG HEROES

Every holiday that you enjoy with family and friends, please remember that there are thousands of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen, men and women alike, far from home wishing they could be with their families as well.  Likewise, on every holiday there will be thousands of men and women police, fire and medical staffers, on duty.

Please also remember that regardless of the rank they held while they served, all of our veterans are deserving of your utmost respect. A “thank you for serving” is never out of order.  Whenever the opportunity presents itself, please support them and their families.

UNSUNG HEROES

To those who’ve fought the enemy and lived to come back home,
those who’ll spend their years reliving the horrors they have known.

To those who slept in foxholes and those who drove the tanks,
those who protect our freedoms  ….to you we give our thanks.

To those who chase the criminals or pursue a speeding car,
who watch over us each day, yet we know not who you are.

To those who drive the fire trucks and run in to put out the flames,
who risk your lives each day, though we seldom know your names.

To those who drive the ambulance or care for the infirmed
…those who make a difference, our respect you all have earned.

To you, our unsung heroes …and to all of your alums,
as your dedication we applaud, we shall all have upturned thumbs.

Here’s to you.

SERVING  COMES  AT  A  COST

He told me he loved her, she’d always be his gal.
She was his girlfriend and I   ,,,,his very best pal.

The days kept passing, we both turned eighteen,
he joined the military, but that was never my dream.

So, I’m off to college and he’s off to war,
he told me he loved her, each day even more.

He went to Vietnam in my sophomore year,
when I mentioned it to her, she shed nary a tear.

He thinks she’s the one, she thinks that he’s not,
the things she really wants are all things he ain’t got.

She felt he’d deceived her, a little bait-N-switch,
she had no plans to wait, until he finished up his hitch.

She said she didn’t love him, which he couldn’t conceive,
she left it for me to tell him she was planning to leave.

Smack dab in the middle was where I now stood,
efforts to convince her would do neither much good.

Though I loved them both, no matter what I might say…
the pain within his heart, was never going to go away.

“He told me he loved her, she’d always be his gal.
She was his girlfriend and I   ,,,,his very best pal.”

THE PLEDGE
© Copyright 2013 Richard Lee King

It’s the final round of the 2011 U S Open Golf championship.  They start it off with a series of patriotic scenes and shots of past championships.  Part of the way through the presentation, you hear a class of school kids reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.   NICE!!!   They continue with great scenes of the military presenting our flag and more scenes from previous “Open” championships. Then a few more lines of the Pledge… more scenes… more of the pledge, it’s all very nicely done,  except for one thing,,,, as they continue with the kids reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, they pause,,, just after the words “… and to the republic, for which it stands one nation……”  then they continue…. leaving out the words “under God” and pick it back up again with the words “With liberty and Justice for all.  They continue running more scenes then more of the kids saying the Pledge and they do exactly the same thing,,, Again…..

Now they’ve “gotten my dander up” This country was founded by people who believed in God…. Our court houses and most of our federal buildings have all contained references to God or religion…. from day one.  Our money, our constitution, the bill of rights…. they all contain some reference to God.

I’m not the least bit religious, but it burns my ass that NBC would cower to the people who take exception to the use of God’s name in our Pledge of Allegiance. They’ve gone too far.  It’s un American!!!!

Let me assure you… it’s not people like me, (who are not particularly religious) who are pushing for this…. The removal of references to God in all ways relating to our nation..… that’s not coming from us.

I was raised attending a country school.  Every morning we stood before the flag, placed our hand over our heart and recited the Pledge…. every single morning….. And,,,, it always included “Under God.”  I never once felt threatened by that.  Nor am I bothered by the fact that the words, “In God We Trust” are on our money.  I’m not bothered by any of the references to God.  Just so you know….
